Why Playing Netball Is More Fun As An Adult

You keep seeing netball leagues for adults pop up on social media but you haven’t played the sport since school and have forgotten nearly all the rules. Don’t worry, this is not a reason for you to not get back into the sport! In fact, since 2019 more than 319,400 adults play netball fortnightly, according to Active Lives Adult Survey. If you still need convincing into why you should start playing netball as an adult, we’ve got 7 reasons that should be enough persuasion to help get you back on the netball court.

  1. Netball brings out your competitive side.

As adults we always strive to be the best of ourselves, that is why the moment you step onto that court to try netball again, you will want to win – and you will do whatever it takes to make that happen. Don’t be surprised if you end up buying a netball post to practice your shooting at home!

2. You will become more confident.

As the weeks go by and your skill for the sport improves, your confidence will grow. This is true with anything we do but netball gives you a sense of pride as your contribution to the game is acknowledged by your fellow team and even by the umpires. You won’t feel the same amount of confidence after going for a solo run.

3. It’s a great way to meet new people.

Joining a netball team means getting out of your comfort zone and meeting new people. There is no need to feel nervous as the other players on your team are in the same boat, but you’ve all signed up for the same reason so before you know it you’ve got a new group of close-knitted friends.

4. Team spirit is a thing.

The first time you win a match will feel like your biggest achievement, and the fact you get to share this with your whole team makes it even better. When you’re working together to achieve a shared goal it brings a sense of solidarity and belonging. You’ll be talking about your win for the rest of the week!

5. Fitting in more exercise during your week.

Department of Health and Human Services suggest adults should get 75 minutes of vigorous aerobic activity a week. It doesn’t sound like a lot but when you’re juggling between work and family life, it’s hard to try and squeeze the time in for exercise. Joining a netball team ensures you fit in the time to focus on your health. Plus you’re having so much fun playing netball you forget it’s real exercise!

6. Get to buy a new pair of shoes.

When most women start playing netball again they show up in their basic running shoes or trainers they found collecting dust in the shoe cupboard. It is highly recommended you purchase a pair of netball shoes. All shoes are built for a specific purpose, netball shoes are built specifically to endure the intense demands of the game and to give proper support when moving up and down the court.

7. More inclusive.

Unlike school and college netball teams where everyone must attend trials to see if you’ll make a spot on the team, adult netball leagues are inclusive to everyone. It doesn’t matter what your age is or how active you are, social leagues like Play Netball welcome everyone to participate and is a great place to start your netball journey.
