It may still be a year away, but anticipation is already high for the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games where the world’s best netball teams will compete for gold under one roof. Of course, we’re all hoping for Vitality Roses to take gold once again after their successful 52-51 win against Australia back in 2018, and now we all have a chance to watch them strut their stuff on court as registration to apply for tickets opens on the 8th of September. There are over one million tickets available for the commonwealth games so we wouldn’t hesitate in applying for a seat to watch some incredible netball.
With all the excitement of the games, we’ve rounded up five facts you may have not known about netball in the Commonwealth Games:
- Netball was first introduced at the 1990 Commonwealth Games in Auckland, New Zealand as a demonstration sport. Previously, only individual sports were allowed to participate.
- Netball did not become an official Commonwealth sport until eight year later at the 1998 Kuala Lumpur Commonwealth Games.
- Netball is the only female-only sport played at the Commonwealth Games.
- Australia is the most successful team in the tournament winning three golds, New Zealand being second with two gold medals.
- England won their first Commonwealth tournament in 2018 against Australia, they are only the third team to both reach a final and win a gold medal.
